Detroit City Guide Book Vol.3 ‘’High Tech Dream / Low Tech Reality’’
L'atelier de Julien Sirjacq, aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, expose le troisième volet de sa série Detroit city guide book : Hi-Tech Dreams / Lo-Tech Reality, à Point Éphémère du 5 au 13 juillet 2019.
Pour son premier voyage outre-atlantique en octobre dernier, l’atelier a été pris d'une impérieuse envie de se jouer des aprioristes et s’est mis en quête d'un regard différent sur l'histoire des États-Unis. La ville de Detroit, par son passé, son présent et ce qu'elle laisse entrevoir de son futur fut l’objet de nos recherches.
Loin des clichés télévisuels d'une ville détruite, totalement criminalisée, où règne la violence et la désolation il était pour nous question de répondre à une toute autre intuition. Celle qui, par les traces qu'y ont laissé les pionniers de la techno Underground Resistance, les MC5, les Black Panthers , le label Motown , Sun Ra et les mythes afro-futuristes, nous a amené à voir en Detroit, un point géographique et idéologique majeur et sans équivalent : seul témoin d'une mutation radicale de l'histoire des Etats-Unis, du capitalisme, et de la société américaine. Contaminant de sa résilience et de sa puissance chaque espace de pensée alternative depuis 40 ans.
Pour ce troisième volet Hi Tech Dreams / Lo Tech Reality, nous avons décidé d'articuler nos intuitions sous forme d'une fresque, retraçant notre voyage selon un regard étranger et autorisant une compréhension rechargée de cette histoire de Detroit. A l'instar de la gigantesque fresque dont Diego Riviera a orné le Detroit Institute of Art en 1933, ce dispositif pictural nous permettra de projeter une vision inventoriée, organisée, imaginée et imagée de ces enjeux ; de tenter d'élucider les porosités et les liens existants entre les mythes Afrofuturiste , la techno, la science-fiction et la politique et de comprendre ce qui réside de l'imaginaire de la ville dans les espaces de créations graphiques et musicales.

For its first trip in North America last October, driven by a strong desire to challenge preconceived ideas, Sirjacq’s studio tried to shed a different light on the history of the United States. Our study focused on the past, present and future of the city of Detroit. Far from the televised stereotypes of a fully criminalized city destroyed by violence and chaos, our goal was to trust a different intuition. An intuition that, through the paths left by the artist Mike Kelley and his band Destroy All Monsters, the techno pioneers Underground Resistance, the MC5, the Black Panthers, the Motown label, Sun Ra and the afro-futuristic myths, made us think of Detroit as a major and unique geographical and ideological anchor point: sole witness of a radical mutation in the history of the United States, in capitalism and in the American society itself. At the center of the historical political violence of the United States, from the dazzling ascent to the brutal decline of a city, an industry, a system and a political core, Detroit came to brew a rebellious and visionary thought, so powerful and resilient that it muscled in every alternative thinking spaces of the last 40 years.
For this third part called “Hi Tech Dreams / Lo-Tech Reality’’, we decided to transfer our intuitions in the form of a fresco, depicting our trip from a foreign point of view and allowing a reloaded understanding of the history of Detroit. Following the example of Diego Rivera’s gigantic fresco
which has been decorating the Detroit Institute of Art since 1933, the use of this mural painting technique allows us to project an inventoried, organized and imagined vision of what is at stake; to try to shed light on the subliminal and existing links between afro-futuristic myths, techno, science fiction and politics, and to understand what lies in the imaginary of the city, in the spaces of graphic and musical creations.
